Health Care Discussion

As I lived my childhood in South Korea, i have experience both South Korea's health care systems and the U.S's health care systems. I got my treatments for my brain edma and went through MRI, CAT and all other medical procedures I dont recall. However few months later when my parents got the bill they were shocked, and so was I. Even with our insurance, the hospital bill was astronomically over priced compared to korea's cost for medical care. Fortunately we were able to afford it. However there are large population in our country who are financially unable to afford their hospital bills. This made me realize that our government needs to improve the medical care and aid and lower the prices of medical bills.
In my research, I found that The U.S. Census Bureau reported that a record 50.7 million residents (which includes 9.9 million non-citizens) or 16.7% of the population were uninsured in 2009. Also U.S pays the most per person for healthcare. This report proves that our country's health care costs are too high, resulting in more people not insured because of the cost. The first step to improve our healthcare system is to pass a bill to set laws and enforce it, so I read about some of Obama's health care bills since he is currently our president.  He stated that his bill  makes insurance more affordable by providing the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history, reducing premium costs for tens of millions of families and small business owners who are priced out of coverage today. This is especially a crucial factor because the middle class families and small business owners take up our majority of populations. Also I can relate to it because a member of my family has been  unemployed due to closure of the company. She is looking for a new job but she needs the same health care and benefits that she had from the previous job.
Next,  This helps over 32 million Americans afford health care who do not get it today – and makes coverage more affordable for many more. Under the plan, 95% of Americans will be insured. It puts our budget and economy on a more stable path by reducing the deficit by more than $100 billion over the next ten years – and more than $1 trillion over the second decade. This will help the government put the money for other important uses.
Sure, all of these facts and improvements sound good on paper. My question and concern is if it is practical and can be efficient and be implemented, and bring the congress to pass it. There are various cons of the system. I could careless if Obama passes the bill or the next president passes it, I just want a new health care system to be passed and improved by all means before it is too late.

  1. I found this post interesting because you have experienced two different healthcare systems. I agree that something should chance about healthcare, but I don't know if the answer is universal healthcare. I like your last paragraph because you express the question of is this realistic? Will this be effective and help our country?
